THE PREDICTION

World number three Elena Rybakina saw her six-match unbeaten streak for 2024 snapped in straight sets by Ekaterina Alexandrova on Thursday, although she may have had one eye on this blockbuster Melbourne opener at the time. The 24-year-old took the first set before finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka last season but she has gained revenge three times since in Indian Wells, Beijing and last week in Brisbane, where she blasted past the Belarussian to lift the title. Doing so made this week’s entry into Adelaide a surprise, but she will not lose sleep over her exit on Thursday as she gears up to face former number one Karolina Pliskova.

World number 37 Pliskova is one of the more unpredictable players on tour these days, capable of beating anyone on her increasingly rare day as much as falling to a limp defeat. A three-set victory over Naomi Osaka in Brisbane last week was as good as her heavy defeat to Katerina Siniakova was poor this week in Adelaide, symptomatic of her recent seasons, but she will certainly start this match motivated. Whether she ends it in the same manner is up for debate but it is likeliest that Rybakina edges a tight first before romping home in two. The Kazakh has won all three of their encounters in straight sets so far.

TIP: ELENA RYBAKINA TO WIN 2-0
