THE PREDICTION

World number 21 Ekaterina Alexandrova stunned an out-of-sorts Elena Rybakina in straight sets on Thursday to blow the Adelaide International draw wide open. The 29-year-old has impressed this week, with a comeback over Magda Linette in the first round backed up by a straight-sets victory over fellow Russian Veronika Kudermetova, but snapping Rybakina’s imperious six-match winning streak was not on the cards. World number 12 Jelena Ostapenko claimed a rare straight-sets result with victory over Marta Kostyuk on Thursday, backing-up strong wins over Sorana Cirstea and Caroline Garcia.

26-year-old Ostapenko is well capable of doubling down from here on in to lift the Adelaide International title as the player with the highest ceiling left in the draw but Alexandrova’s consistent power has found a lot of joy in their meetings over the years. The Russian leads their head-to-head 4-2 at tour level and she has taken at least a set from each of those six encounters, including in defeat to Ostapenko last time around in San Diego. Back Alexandrova to win a set here to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA TO WIN
