World number 68 Dusan Lajovic has been playing deceptively good tennis in recent months, falling foul to Carlos Alcaraz on three occasions in the quarter-finals of the Buenos Aires Open, Rio Open and most recently the third round of the Miami Open. The 32-year-old’s greatest run in tennis ended in defeat in the final here to Fabio Fognini back in 2019 and despite recent long periods of poor form he will always be a threat on his favoured clay. World number 95 Alexei Popyrin twice came back from a set down in his qualifying matches to squeak through to the main draw at Monte-Carlo but this is probably the Aussie’s weakest surface, particularly at low altitude. The 23-year-old has already won more matches this season than his woeful 2022 but there are still signs of struggling in key moments on court that make the experienced Lajovic look the favourite here. The suitably cautious move would be taking Lajovic to earn at least a set but the Serb should just edge through.
