World number 64 Donna Vekic suddenly burst into form at the San Diego Open late last season, beating the likes of Maria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka before a three-set defeat in the final to Iga Swiatek. The former world number 19 has always been well capable of returning to the top 20 on tour with enough consistency but she struggled to make it past Oksana Selekhmeteva in three tight sets on Tuesday, eventually out-running the Russian 10-7 in a deciding tiebreak. This is one of the higher-quality second round matches on Thursday but given Vekic’s opener it looks like world number 20 Liudmila Samsonova’s to lose. The 24-year-old claimed three WTA titles on the late hardcourt swing last season and a run to the round of 16 at the US Open suggests she can go far here in Melbourne if she gets past this tough first meeting with Vekic. The 18th seed beat Jasmine Paolini handily in the first round and she can be backed to earn at least a set here as the likelier of two very capable victors. Do not be fooled by Vekic’s current ranking.
