THE PREDICTION

31-year-old Diego Schwartzman made the surprising announcement that he will be retiring at the end of this season, seemingly bereft of ideas as to how to treat the woeful form of his past two seasons. The Argentine set a career-high ATP world ranking of eighth in 2020, after a semi-final exit to Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros, but last season’s record of 13-25 depicted a steep decline from his entertaining best tennis and he is yet to win a match in 2024. Two hard-fought qualifying wins over Mikhail Kukushkin and Albert Ramos-Vinolas this week hand him a chance at snapping that poor run here and he will be desperate to play well in his last appearance in Rome, where he finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic after famously stunning Nadal in the quarter-finals 10 years ago.

World number 70 Aleksandar Vukic brings a five-match losing streak into Rome but he remains the slightest favourite on form this season. The Aussie will have to cope with playing the villain of this piece against a popular stalwart of the last decade of ATP tennis but three sets seem likelier than two. Head says back Vukic to win a set and heart says Schwartzman, so consider taking three sets if leaving this one out of an accumulator.

TIP: TOTAL 3 SETS
