THE PREDICTION
This promises to be one of the best matches of the first round between 2016 Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber and 2022 runner-up Danielle Collins, both of whom are far from their best coming into Melbourne. 35-year-old Kerber won her maiden Grand Slam title here eight years ago, adding two more at the US Open later that year and at Wimbledon in 2018. The German returns from 18 months away from the tour as a new mother with hopes of getting back towards the top of the sport and there were encouraging signs in her five singles matches at the United Cup for Germany in their shock victory last week, taking a set from Caroline Garcia and claiming her first win since July 2022 against Ajla Tomljanovic.
World number 54 Collins finished runner-up to Ash Barty here two years ago, stunning Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals, but we have seen very little of her best level since. The American took eventual runner-up Elena Rybakina to three sets before a third round exit here last season, though, and she should never be underestimated at a major tournament. Back Collins to earn at least a set as the likelier of two rather out-of-sorts players to edge through.
