World number 22 Francisco Cerundolo has lost both of his matches so far in 2024 to bring surprising poor form into the Australian Open. The 25-year-old enjoyed another steadily progressive season last year, reaching the round of 16 at a major for the first time before a five-set defeat to Holger Rune and winning a second ATP title in Eastbourne, but his poor start to 2024 makes this clash with Aussie underdog Dane Sweeny suddenly very interesting. The 22-year-old qualified the hard way this week to make his Australian Open debut and he will be backed to the hilt on the John Cain Arena, with tournament organisers perhaps offering an olive branch for withholding a wildcard. Cerundolo should be able to work out some kinks over a five-set opener but the shrewd move may be taking Sweeny to snatch a set in the meantime.
