THE PREDICTION

World number 29 Jiri Lehecka made a splash in his first Davis Cup Group stage as the first option for former champions Czechia, taking the tie out of reach against hosts Spain with a tight straight-sets victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Tomas Machac looked by far the more comfortable on a hardcourt in his straight-sets victory over clay-courter Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the opener to set the tone in Valencia and the Czechs really turned the screw when their unfamiliar doubles pairing of Adam Pavlasek and teenager Jakub Mensik, who only just made his tour debut at the US Open, beat Davidovich Fokina and Marcel Granollers in three sets to win 3-0.

South Korea looked set for a tough week in a stacked Group C but they put up more of a fight than expected, with first option Soonwoo Kwon taking the first set from Laslo Djere before falling in three in only his second tour-level match back from injury. Seongchan Hong lost a tight opener to Dusan Lajovic to suggest he may cause an upset some time this week and their doubles pairing of Jisung Nam and Minkyu Song really had no business taking the first set of a three-set defeat to Serbia’s doubles pair. Still, it would not be a surprise to see South Korea head home 0-9 by the end of the week.

Czechia looked strong coming into Group C but a 3-0 shock win over Spain says they can edge through to the Finals as runners-up, with Serbia set to enjoy Novak Djokovic’s company for the rest of the week. Tomas Machac is far better than his ranking of 119th and he should dominate the opening match to set the tone on Thursday, with Jiri Lehecka set for a challenge against Soonwoo Kwon but one that should ultimately end in straight sets. Take Czechia to win the tie 3-0.
