THE PREDICTION
World number seven Marketa Vondrousova stunned the tennis world with her remarkable run to the Wimbledon title last summer, beating Ons Jabeur in the final. The 24-year-old had previously reached the Roland-Garros final in 2019 as a teenager to prove herself a future star but there had been no evidence at all of her efficacy on grass before touching down at SW19 and she looked just as strong on the hardcourt swing before losing a fair bit of form to a shoulder issue. 21-year-old Qinwen Zheng also enjoyed the best season of her young career so far, with a Gold Medal at the Asian Games complementing her first two WTA titles claimed at the Palermo Ladies Open and Zhengzhou Open on clay and hardcourts, respectively. The Chinese rising star comes into the United Cup at a career-high WTA world ranking of 15th with her sights firmly set on the top 10 in 2024 and she should be well-backed by a strong Asian fanbase in Australia.
Vondrousova brings a six-match losing streak to Perth, stretching back to her quarter-final exit at the US Open in September, but the Czech has had plenty of time to rehab her shoulder. Both players have reason to expect another excellent season but this first meeting between the two could be anyone’s. With Czechia likelier to be 1-0 up from the ATP match, back Qinwen Zheng to muster her resolve to earn at least a set in this key battle.
