World number 23 Donna Vekic enjoyed a topsy-turvy sort of season last year but she no doubt improved on recent years, winning her fourth WTA title at the Monterrey Open and reaching the quarter-finals at the Australian Open. Victory at the Hopman Cup alongside Borna Coric should give Croatia that extra experienced edge in tight encounters, and that should see Vekic favoured in the doubles alongside Ivan Dodig or Coric, but the 27-year-old should have little trouble coming through this encounter anyway. World number 539 Malene Helgo made a match of it against Arantxa Rus on Saturday but she fell quickly in the second set as the gulf in class was made apparent. A first meeting with Vekic, who can sometimes take some winding up, may go similarly here but taking the Croat to win in straight sets feels a reasonable call.
