THE PREDICTION
World number 11 Casper Ruud beat Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets on Saturday to kick-start his 2024 season in encouraging style. The 25-year-old was unable to save the tie against the Netherlands, who have one of the best doubles partnerships at the United Cup, but it was always going to be a tall order as Norway’s only clear, elite player here in Sydney. World number 37 Borna Coric ended his season early last year after a first round defeat to Sebastian Baez at the US Open and it remains to be seen how he fares in another return from injury. The 27-year-old is a hugely talented player with a balanced set of skills but he will have to improve on his 2023 form if he is to upset former number two Ruud, whom he beat in three sets in their only previous encounter back in 2019.
Coric won the Hopman Cup alongside Donna Vekic last summer and that experience could see them combine well in the doubles to save this tie, with Vekic likely to blast through her singles match, but back Ruud to have too much with a match in his legs.
