THE PREDICTION
19-year-old Coco Gauff realised her destiny at the US Open last September, coming back from a set down to stun then world number one Aryna Sabalenka amidst raucous scenes in New York. The American had already reached a Grand Slam final the season before, finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros, but her transformation over last summer from prodigal talent to a tireless force of nature saw her win a first 500 in Washington, then a first Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, and then a maiden major title – roughly the same age as her idols Serena and Venus Williams, who were 19 and 20 respectively. Gauff started 2024 off with a game in serious need of a rethink but she still managed to win the Auckland Classic without dropping a set and she looks the clear favourite to defend that trophy this week.
THE LOWDOWN
From one prodigious youth to another, 16-year-old Brenda Fruhvirtova moved back up to her career-high WTA world ranking of 109th after an impressive straight-sets victory over Anna Blinkova on Tuesday, backing up a spotless qualifying run. The Czech won four of five ITF finals reached late last season in a clear effort to boost herself up to main tour contention in 2024, where she will join elder sister Linda as two of a seemingly endless line of up-and-coming Czech stars. Gauff beat Claire Liu in straight sets on Tuesday to look too good to lose this first meeting with Fruhvirtova but the 16-year-old is clearly on the right trail. Back the defending champion to win in straight sets.
