THE PREDICTION

This promises to be a thrilling and likely topsy-turvy encounter between world number nine Maria Sakkari and number 11 Caroline Garcia, with both players overturning some poor form this week. 28-year-old Sakkari has especially suffered in recent months, with her shock exit at the US Open her third consecutive first round defeat at a major tournament, but she is yet to drop a set this week with some encouraging results. Garcia has had the tough time of it in Guadalajara but a straight-sets victory over former world number one Victoria Azarenka on Thursday was the first time she has won three matches in a row since finishing runner-up to Donna Vekic in March – notably also in Mexico at the Monterrey Open.

Garcia beat Sakkari in each of their first three meetings, including twice this time last year en-route to titles in Cincinnati and the WTA Finals, but the Greek got a point on the board in three tight sets at the Qatar Open in February. Three sets seem likelier than two, as has happened in two of their last three matches, so back Garcia to earn at least one of them, as she has in each of their four encounters, to leave the victor up to chance.
