THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka won her two Grand Slam titles here back-to-back in 2012 and 2013, with her affinity for the Australia Open undeniable. The 34-year-old found fits and bursts of strong form last season but none more so than here in Melbourne, where she upset Madison keys and Jessica Pegula before defeat in the semi-final to eventual runner-up Elena Rybakina. Azarenka has reached at least the quarter-finals on six occasions at the Australian Open and she was a Grand Slam finalist as recently as 2020, finishing runner-up to Naomi Osaka, so despite her dwindling powers at the top of the sport she should always be considered a threat at hardcourt majors.

World number 55 Camila Giorgi is one of the most enigmatic players on the tour with a sumptuous yet wholly intermittent talent for striking a tennis ball. The 32-year-old also bursts into brief form at a moment’s notice but failing to qualify for Adelaide this week does not bode well for her chances in this tough opener. Azarenka beat the Italian in straight sets last March in Miami, to level their head-to-head at 2-2, but take her to win outright for caution’s sake at this early stage.

TIP: VICTORIA AZARENKA TO WIN
