THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating third encounter of the season between world number 44 Brandon Nakashima and number 55 Mackenzie McDonald. 27-year-old McDonald beat Nakashima in five gruelling sets at the Australian Open in January before more recently blasting past his fellow American in straight sets at the Mexican Open last month as he enjoys perhaps the best form of his career. McDonald takes an excellent 14-8 record into Monte-Carlo and wins this season over the likes of Rafael Nadal, albeit injured in Melbourne, and Matteo Berrettini display a confidence lacking from previous seasons. 21-year-old Nakashima ended last year on a high as the Next Gen ATP champion but he has so far struggled to find any rhythm on tour with just three wins to his name so far. Nakashima is probably the more comfortable clay-courter in this match but McDonald leads their head-to-head 3-0 so far and backing the elder American to edge through outright seems a reasonable call.
