THE PREDICTION
World number eight Daria Kasatkina won her first WTA title here back in 2017 and despite her prowess on other surfaces the former Roland-Garros junior champion is probably at her best on clay. After a concerningly erratic start to 2023 the 25-year-old should enjoy a return to her favoured surface and she looked good in her opener against Madison Brengle on Wednesday, conceding just three games. This is a tricky first encounter with world number 38 Bernarda Pera, though, after the American claimed her first two WTA titles on clay last summer to prove her ability on the surface. The 28-year-old has already taken two solid wins in Charleston and she will know that Kasatkina is vulnerable right now after so many odd losses in 2023. The suitably cautious move is taking Kasatkina to win outright but the shrewd one could be backing Pera to earn at least one on home soil.
