26-year-old Bernabe Zapata Miralles comes into the Monte-Carlo Open at a career-high ATP world ranking of 43rd and a three-set victory over world number 12 Hubert Hurkacz on Thursday is proof of what he is capable on his favoured surface. The Spaniard reached the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last summer and it will be fascinating to see what he can achieve on the swing this season with a higher ranking but this is a tough opening draw against world number 50 Benjamin Bonzi. The Frenchman, also 26, is at his best on a hardcourt but he has enjoyed success on clay on the Challenger circuit and he should gather some of the home-from-home support in Monaco. A first meeting between the two seems likely to see three sets here and that makes backing Zapata Miralles to earn at least one of them the sensible call.
