World number 89 Ben Shelton’s rise continues apace after the 20-year-old beat Zhizhen Zhang in five sets on Tuesday, taking the championship tiebreak 10-8. The American will be pleased to claim his first Grand Slam match after a five-set defeat on his overall debut at the US Open last summer but he will be equally keen to take this second round opportunity more clinically. World number 154 Nicolas Jarry provided one of the bigger shocks of the first round with a straight-sets victory over Miomir Kecmanovic, who reached the round of 16 here last season, to continue some solid momentum from qualifying. The Chilean set a career-high ATP world ranking of 38th as recently as 2019 but whilst he can be far better than his current ranking this looks like Shelton’s to lose on current form. Given the American’s first two major matches went to five sets, back Shelton to earn at least two here as the likelier of two capable victors.
