This will be a fascinating clash between world number 19 Ben Shelton’s irrepressible youth and number 79 Marcos Giron’s hard-earned deep run here in Tokyo. 30-year-old Giron beat an out-of-sorts Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets on Friday to back-up two excellent wins over Japanese number one Yoshihito Nishioka and second seed Casper Ruud, in keeping with his recent quality performances on tour. The elder American always seems to burst into form at this stage of the season and he can take confidence in a 1-0 lead over rising star Shelton after beating his compatriot in straight sets at the Delray Beach Open back in February. This, however, is starting to feel like Shelton’s week in Tokyo. The 21-year-old has endured a tough first season on the tour, sandwiched in-between two remarkable runs at Grand Slams in Melbourne and New York, but a run to the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters last week and this first ATP 500 semi-final is very significant progress.
A straight-sets victory over Tommy Paul on Thursday improved on two choppy results earlier this week but the youngster has the mentality to excel at the business end of a tournament – with last week’s exit to Sebastian Korda coming by the finest of margins.
