20-year-old Ben Shelton comes into his Monte-Carlo Open debut at a career-high ATP world ranking of 39th after an incredible run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open back in January. The American has all the tools to be a top 10 stalwart one day as a powerful left-hander with a deceptively good serve but it remains to be seen how his game translates to clay after an early exit at the Estoril Open on Thursday. World number 26 Grigor Dimitrov takes an average, by his standards, 8-6 record into Monte-Carlo and it is getting harder to back the Bulgarian against players inside the top 40 with any real confidence despite his occasional flashes of brilliance. The 31-year-old has not played on clay since a third round exit to Diego Schwartzman at Roland-Garros last summer and despite Shelton’s inexperience in these conditions it would not be a surprise to see him pull off an upset here. There is no clear sensible thing to do here, so leave this match out of an accumulator, but consider a one-off on Shelton to win the day on sheer belief.
