THE LOWDOWN
Team Australia have a huge chance to get a strong foothold in at the Billie Jean King Cup with this kind opener over Slovenia and this could be a week to remember for Ajla Tomljanovic, who leads the line after playing just four competitive matches this season, two at tour level. The 30-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 32nd in April off the back of her two impressive quarter-finals reached at Wimbledon and the US Open last season but injuries have seen her fall back outside the top 500. Former world number 20 Daria Saville comes into Seville ranked outside the top 200 herself after struggling to find her way back from an ACL injury suffered around this time last season. The pair should both thrive in a team format but it remains to be seen how they fare against a hugely unpredictable Slovenia team.
25-year-old Tamara Zidansek set a career-high WTA world ranking of 22nd early last year off the back of her remarkable run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros but she comes into Seville ranked world number 100 after another disappointing year. It is a similar story for the hugely talented Kaja Juvan, currently ranked 104th but with the ability to break inside the top 30, although she has plenty of time to blossom at least at only 22 years old. Zidansek and Juvan are both well capable of bursting into resilient form this week but it remains to be seen how they cope with the dual responsibility of playing doubles too, with Slovenia’s poor strength in depth likely their downfall this week.
THE PREDICTION
Tomljanovic has barely played this year but she will be desperate to impress in her opening match before posing a bit more of a risk for Australia, just as she did in her first match back at the US Open before having to withdraw. The 30-year-old will play as second option by ranking this week behind Daria Saville but performances on court should not reflect that and that could be Australia’s main trump card this week in unbalancing the fixtures. Tomljanovic should have enough to oust the enigmatic Kaja Juvan first up but Zidansek will be a tough force for Saville to tackle with Slovenia backed against a wall. Back Australia to edge through this tie but anything could happen in a likely doubles decider.
