THE PREDICTION

This looks the really crucial match of the semi-final between hosts Australia and a surprisingly potent, slightly makeshift German team. World number 12 Alex de Minaur will be flying high after beating a world number one player for the first time in his career on Wednesday and it will not matter to the 24-year-old that Novak Djokovic was clearly struggling with a concerning wrist issue. Expect the Aussie to throw everything into this semi-final with the backing of a partisan atmosphere but world number seven Alexander Zverev leads their head-to-head 6-1 and he has improved with each passing round, ousting Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets on Friday to set the tone in a 2-1 victory against Greece.

The result of the opening match between Ajla Tomljanovic and Angelique Kerber will weigh heavily on this but on the face of it De Minaur has very little pedigree for tackling the biggest servers on tour, although his one victory over Zverev came in an international setting at the ATP Cup back in 2020. Back Zverev to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors to leave this tough one up to chance.

TIP: ALEXANDER ZVEREV TO WIN A SET
