21-year-old Ben Shelton will move up to a career-high ATP world ranking of 17th but he could move as high as 15th if he wins this maiden tour final. The American burst onto the scene at the US Open last summer but his remarkable run to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open in January came prematurely as he struggled to find consistency on his first full tour season. A run to the semi-finals at the US Open this September felt different, though, as he overcame the likes of Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul to announce himself as the USA’s next star and he has since thoroughly impressed on tour – reaching the quarter-finals in Shanghai last week and now this huge opportunity in Tokyo. World number 50 Aslan Karatsev is well-versed in spoiling the party, though, as an enigmatic and unorthodox player on tour.
The 30-year-old is yet to drop a set this week but Shelton’s victory in New York last month suggests he is the slightest favourite on momentum and, whilst Karatsev’s 3-1 record in finals is a daunting figure, Shelton can count on a likely partisan atmosphere as the charismatic rising star. Back Shelton to thrive under the pressure to edge the match, probably in three sets, or avoid the full result altogether by taking at least a tiebreak and for Shelton to earn at least a set.
