25-year-old Aryna Sabalenka set two huge career milestones last season, winning her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open with a superb comeback over Elena Rybakina and finishing runner-up to Coco Gauff at the US Open to become world number one for the first time. The Belarussian saw her lead at the top quickly stolen away by a resurgent Iga Swiatek late last season but that battle looks set to continue apace this year, with the likes of Gauff and Rybakina in hot pursuit. Sabalenka has reached at least the semi-finals in each of her last five Grand Slam appearances to become perhaps the most consistent high performer on the WTA tour.
THE PREDICTION
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka conceded just three games to Lucia Bronzetti on Wednesday to open her account at the Brisbane 500 and she began last season in similar form, winning the Adelaide 500 en-route to her career-best trophy in Melbourne. World number 33 Lin Zhu also enjoyed the form of her career this time last season with a run to the round of 16 in Melbourne preceding a maiden WTA title claimed in Thailand. The 29-year-old came back from a set down to stun Danielle Collins in impressive fashion on Wednesday but she should find a totally different prospect in Sabalenka, who has won each of their two previous tour-level meetings in comfortable straight sets.
