THE PREDICTION

23-year-old Alexander Shevchenko enjoyed his tour breakthrough here in Madrid last season, first winning the Madrid Challenger before an excellent run from qualifying through to the third round. It took an in-form Daniil Medvedev to oust Shevchenko that day but the Kazakh will do well to emulate that run this year with poorer form coming into the draw and no run-up in Madrid. His three-match losing streak, with two wins from two on clay, opens the door world number 77 Arthur Rinderknech if the Frenchman can find some elusive form of his own in this first encounter. The 28-year-old impressed in these conditions on his way up a few years ago but it has been a real struggle since setting a career-high of 41st in late 2022. Very little recent form between them makes this a tough first round match to call but take Shevchenko to earn at least a set given his remarkable spell in this city last year.

TIP: ALEXANDER SHEVCHENKO TO WIN A SET
