THE PREDICTION

World number six Coco Gauff passed a significant test on Saturday with an excellent comeback over rising star Mirra Andreeva, who took the first-set tiebreak before Gauff rallied to take the next two 6-1 6-1. 19-year-old Gauff finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek here last summer after a searing campaign but she came to Paris this year with much less expectation on her shoulders after a, so far, largely average season. This is a huge opportunity for the American to make a third quarter-final at a Grand Slam but she may not have it all her own way against an experienced former top 30 player in Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova, who is suddenly in the biggest match of her career. World number 100 Schmiedlova conceded just four games to Kayla Day on Saturday to back-up her shock win over Veronika Kudermetova in the first round and the Slovak is yet to drop a set in Paris.

Schmiedlova should not be underestimated here with some strong momentum behind her but Gauff’s confidence will have improved a lot after the third round and she beat the Slovak, on clay, in their only previous encounter at the Madrid Open last season. Back Gauff to win outright here with three sets probably more likely than two.
