Kayla Day advanced to the next round in Guadalajara after a hard-fought victory over Elvina Kalieva. The American had to survive a lengthy first set tiebreak before making the decisive breakthrough in the second to win 7-6 (9) 6-4. Day beat Suzan Lamens in Barranquilla last week, but then lost to Elsa Jacquemot. She also qualified for the Cincinnati Open in August.

Her next opponent is Liudmila Samsonova, who began her campaign with a straight sets win over Jacquemot. The eighth seed trailed by a break during the first set and then faced three set points in the tiebreak but reeled off five consecutive points to edge ahead. She dominated the second to win 7-6 (6) 6-2. It was an encouraging response to her US Open first-round defeat to Maya Joint. 

Day can make the opening stages competitive, although Samsonova’s superior power gives her a chance of pulling away.
