Brentford preview: The physical Bees

Keith Andrews is in charge of a robust Brentford side that have again started the season steadily with one win and three draws in their opening four matches of the campaign after they narrowly missed out on European qualification last season.

The Bees hammered Tottenham Hotspur by three goals to nil on the opening day before being denied victories by late equalisers against Leeds United and Sunderland ahead of an entertaining 2-2 draw with AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium last week.

Chelsea preview: Chaotic Chelsea

Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea have been thrilling to watch this season with their six matches across all competitions consisting of 30 goals with 18 scored and, frustratingly from a Chelsea perspective, 12 conceded.

They were left frustrated as they shared a 2-2 draw with newly-promoted high-flyers Hull City at Stamford Bridge last week. They went a goal ahead early on before a Mohammed Belloumi brace forced Chelsea into rescuing a point in the second half.

Brentford team news: Conservative approach

Keith Andrews has a flexible style and with that, there is an expectation they go with a more conservative style here with Vitaly Janelt playing in an advanced midfield role ahead of Mikkel Damsgaard.

The Bees are dealing with a few key injuries at the back with Sepp van den Berg a longer-term absentee and now captain Nathan Collins not expected to be available until after the international break.

Xabi Alonso has been key to avoid taking a risk over Moises Caicedo and it would be surprising to see him thrown straight into the mix in what should be a fast and furious game in West London.

Jordan Henderson is working his way back from the wrist injury he sustained at FIFA World Cup 2026, with Emmanuel Emegha also seemingly close to a return to full fitness, too. Joao Pedro is also now a doubt with Alonso coy on his fitness, albeit not ruling out that he could feature.

Either with a direct style on the counter-attack or with their set-pieces, Brentford will seek to overwhelm their opponents, regardless of who it is, with home advantage. Given Chelsea’s defensive lapses thus far, they will also be confident of punishing The Blues. Chelsea being able to outscore anyone is already a theory put to one side after a defeat to Arsenal and a draw with Hull. However, they will outscore most teams and so siding with the visitors in an entertaining clash is the way to go for this one.
