Zeynep Sonmez made a convincing start at the Guadalajara Open as she beat qualifier Iryna Shymanovch inside one hour. The Turk conceded just two games, winning 6-1 6-1 to complete one of her most convincing victories of her campaign so far. It was an excellent response after her first-round defeat at the US Open to Coco Gauff. One of Sonmez’s best results of the season was at another Mexican event, reaching the quarter-finals in Merida.

Her next opponent is defending champion Iva Jovic. The teenager won her maiden WTA title at the event last season, beating Emiliana Arango in the final. She enjoyed her best run at the US Open last time out, defeating Alexandra Eala to progress to the round-of-16. Jovic then lost to compatriot and world number four Gauff in straight sets.

Sonmez already has a match in these conditions and should be able to challenge Jovic in the early stages.
