Marta Kostyuk begins her Guadalajara Open campaign after receiving a first-round bye as the top seed. The Ukrainian arrives in Mexico after a run to the round-of-16 at the US Open. She beat Storm Hunter, Sloane Stephens and Ekaterina Alexandrova before a defeat to Linda Noskova in three sets. That followed another productive hard court event in Cincinnati, as Kostyuk progressed to the last eight. It’s still been a fine campaign for the 24-year-old, with her first WTA 1000 title in Madrid and two Grand Slam semi-finals.

Her opponent is Taylor Townsend. The American continued her fine form after battling past Tatjana Maria. Townsend dropped the first set after failing to win a point in the tiebreak, but she controlled the rest of the match to win 6-7 (0) 6-3 6-2.  She also advanced to the round-of-16 in New York, losing to world number one Aryna Sabalenka, before going on to win the women’s doubles title with Katerina Siniakova.

Kostyuk leads the head-to-head 2-0. They played against each other at Indian Wells earlier in the season, with the world number 10 winning in straight sets. Townsend will likely prove to be a tough test for the top seed.
