World number 17 Jelena Ostapenko put aside some recent poor form to beat Dayana Yastremska in straight sets on Monday. The former world number five won Roland-Garros in 2017 at barely 20 years old but her blistering forehand is a weapon to fear on any surface at any given time, with her turbulent mentality on court often as much a helper as a hindrance. Hardcourt conditions are arguably the Latvian’s least-favourite, though, as she has failed to make it past the third round at both the Australian Open and US Open so far. This first meeting with world number 81 Anna Bondar looks a kind second round fixture all the same. The Hungarian overcame Ana Bogdan in three sets for a first Grand Slam match won at the fifth attempt but despite the confidence that should bring Ostapenko should be blasting through in straight sets here.
