THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Andy Murray has hinted quite heavily that he may be set to call time on his illustrious career this season, perhaps even this summer, after a poor few months on tour. The 36-year-old has managed to pick up two wins in the space of a week to show for some encouraging signs, though, but he will need to improve on a comeback over an out of sorts Denis Shapovalov on Monday. The Brit leads French number one Ugo Humbert 2-0 in their head-to-head but the pair have not met since 2021, where Murray came back from a set down to oust Humbert in his native Metz. 25-year-old Humbert won his native tournament at the end of last season to cap off an excellent return to form in 2023 and he made it four career titles with victory in Montpellier earlier this month. Humbert overcame Gael Monfils in three tight sets on Tuesday to suggest there is some scope for a proper battle here and Murray may well be prepared for it having already faced a powerful left-hander in Shapovalov.

The Brit won his most recent of 46 career ATP titles at the European Open in 2019, also coming back from a set down to beat Humbert in the semi-finals, and that touch of fate in the fixture will not go unnoticed. Humbert looks the obvious favourite to come through on recent form but consider taking Murray to earn at least a set with a little more fight, or perhaps a relieving of pressure, in his game in recent weeks.
