This could be a proper thriller on Thursday if world number six Andrey Rublev and number 12 Karen Khachanov bring their best tennis to a fourth meeting between the two. Both Russians are very handy on clay, with Rublev especially enjoying some strong results on the surface in recent seasons, but this will be their first encounter on the surface in a head-to-head record that favours Khachanov 2-1 – with a win apiece on grass and Khachanov claiming their only Masters-level match at Indian Wells in 2019. The pair are playing doubles together this week in Monte-Carlo to add an extra note of intrigue to the clash but there should be a good-natured exchange at the net no matter who wins. 25-year-old Rublev survived an early scare to edge past Jaume Munar on Tuesday whilst Khachanov has already knocked out last season’s runner-up, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and ousted Ilya Ivashka in straight sets to looks the favourite on form here.
