THE PREDICTION
World number four Elena Rybakina made a huge statement of intent on Thursday, blasting aside former number 12 Elise Mertens 6-1 6-0, to look the likely challenger to Aryna Sabalenka in a much-anticipated final this weekend. The 24-year-old endured a tough second half to last season after struggling with illness, injuries and a seemingly inordinate amount of scheduling issues but she will have a clean-slate approach to 2024 as she aims to return to the Australian Open final – where she lost to Sabalenka from a set up last year. World number 28 Anastasia Potapova stood up to be counted on Thursday with an excellent three-set victory over Veronika Kudermetova, improving on her choppy opener over Daria Saville, and she could cause Rybakina some problems in their first tour-level encounter. ]
The 22-year-old is well capable of fighting fire with fire for power and pace here but Rybakina has looked imperious so far. Take the Kazakh to win outright for a suitably cautious concession this early in the season.
TIP: ELENA RYBAKINA TO WIN
