THE PREDICTION

This is certainly a match to keep away from any promising accumulators as former world number 11 Alize Cornet, capable of anything between a blistering performance and a double bagel blowout these days, and 20-year-old Maria Timofeeva, who burst into form at the Hungarian Open to win her maiden WTA title on her tour debut in July. The Russian has barely won a match off the tour since, let alone on it, but she qualified well this week to make her Grand Slam debut here in Melbourne and she stands a strong chance at coming through against the ever-unpredictable Cornet. There should be some residual good memories for 33-year-old Cornet after she finally broke her Grand Slam quarter-final duck here in 2022 but she lost three of four first round matches at the majors last season in what had been proposed to be her last. Back Timofeeva to win at least a set as the likelier of the two to come through.

TIP: MARIA TIMOFEEVA TO WIN A SET
