THE PREDICTION

Former world number two Alexander Zverev suffered a season-ending injury in the semi-finals here last summer, where he was looking the likelier to come through a thriller against eventual champion Rafael Nadal, and he is now one match from returning to the scene of the crime in Paris. The 26-year-old has struggled to find his best tennis since returning to tour at the start of this season but he looks a different player this campaign, conceding just one set so far to Frances Tiafoe before Monday’s hammering of Grigor Dimitrov. 23-year-old Tomas Martin Etcheverry is enjoying the most important period of his young career so far with a remarkable run to the quarter-finals without dropping a set at Roland-Garros. The Argentine has finished runner-up at two tour finals this season but a run like this looked out of the question until he upset Borna Coric in the third round, backing it up with an assured victory over Yoshihito Nishioka.

Zverev is starting to look like the likeliest finalist from this portion of the draw but Etcheverry will pose a totally different challenge to the opponents he has beaten so far. Back the German to win outright here with four or even five sets a distinct possibility if the Argentine wins the crowd’s support on Phillippe-Chatrier.
