THE PREDICTION
World number six Alexander Zverev returned to tour from a six month absence here last season, losing to Michal Mmoh in four sets in the second round. The 26-year-old had found the form of his career in the summer of 2022, looking the better player against Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals at Roland-Garros before a horrific ankle injury, but after steady work last year he looks able to rediscover that level. After struggling for many years on the international stage, Zverev led the line for surprise United Cup champions Germany last week with four singles victories and three crucial doubles deciders alongside Laura Siegemund. The confidence from that should see him blast through the opening rounds here in Melbourne, with this a kind enough tie against compatriot Dominik Koepfer as the 29-year-old continues to struggle with his own return to tour.
World number 61 Koepfer enjoyed some strong work on the Challenger circuit either side of the winter break but he has been unfortunate to draw an elite player in strong form. Back Zverev to extend his lead to 3-0 in their head-to-head outright, with four sets about as likely as three.
