THE PREDICTION

24-year-old Alex de Minaur set a career-high ATP world ranking of 10th this week after leading Australia to the semi-finals of the United Cup with a remarkable straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic. The Aussie will be backed to the hilt as the only real hope of a home deep-runner at the Australian Open this season and he thrived in that role last year before coming unstuck against eventual champion Djokovic in blistering fashion. The fact that Djokovic was struggling with a wrist injury will matter little to De Minaur, who has been working tirelessly on an upward trajectory for the last 12 months, and the confidence of beating a world number one for the first time should force him through some key moments in the early rounds of a tough draw.

Former number three Milos Raonic will make another go at returning to full tour life this season but the big Canadian’s body only allowed him eight matches last year. Raonic’s serve is still a potent weapon but back De Minaur’s new-and-improved wherewithal to withstand the pressure in an outright win.

TIP: ALEX DE MINAUR TO WIN
