THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Nick Kyrgios played just 15 tour-level matches last season but he still managed to find the time to entertain with two incredible five-set victories over Ugo Humbert at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. The former world number 13 lost the last five matches of his season last year as he struggled with injuries and it is probably worth leaving this first match of 2022 against world number 88 Alex Molcan alone before we know where his level is at. Playing in Australia suits the big-serving maverick, though, and he hit the ground running this time last year in one of Melbourne’s warm-up events. 24-year-old Molcan reached a first tour final last season, finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the Belgrade 2 Open, as well as a first third round at a Grand Slam with a superb five-set victory over Brandon Nakashima at the US Open. The Slovak should push on again this year but if Kyrgios is anywhere near his working level this should fall the Aussie’s way.
