THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Ugo Humbert showed the tennis world exactly what he is capable of with a stunning three-set win over world number two Daniil Medvedev on Sunday. The current world number 35 is a future top 10 star and only a frustrating injury kept him from building on a superb ATP 500 win at the Halle Open last summer. He takes on world number seven Matteo Berrettini, who looked tight in his first competitive match of the new season against an inspired Alex de Minaur. The Italians were the pre-tournament favourites but losing 2-1 to a spirited Team Australia makes each of the three matches against an understrength France vital. Humbert’s victory over Medvedev suggests he is the likelier winner here but Berrettini will be better in this second match of the week after blowing off some cobwebs and he was the victor of their only previous meeting back at the US Open in 2020. If and when Humbert beats the very best players he usually does it the hard way, so taking the Frenchman to win at least a set looks the most sensible move here.
