World number 33 Dusan Lajovic was competitive but well beaten by Casper Ruud in his opening rubber for Serbia but Filip Krajinovic’s heroics in the singles and doubles saw them win the tie 2-1. 31-year-old Lajovic is one of the lower-ranked first options at the ATP Cup with world number one Novak Djokovic’s absence a huge gulf and he will again be the underdog in this meeting with world number 17 Cristian Garin. However, Garin’s level was surprisingly flat against Roberto Bautista Agut in Chile’s opening rubber with Spain as he lost 6-0, 6-3 with little resistance. The hard surface is not Garin’s favourite and a lack of match practice should see Lajovic take at least a set here as the player nearer his best level.
