25-year-old Cristian Garin reached a career-high 17th in the ATP world rankings in September of last year despite a fair downturn in form after a solid summer. The Chilean grabbed a fifth ATP title to make it three years with at least one won in a row, which is more than can be said for 33-year-old Roberto Bautista Agut who has not lifted a trophy since 2019. On clay this would be a very tough call with Garin’s best tennis saved for the red surface but it will be fascinating to see the level that RBA manages to produce after a fairly obvious downturn towards the end of last season. At his best the Spaniard would have the advantage on hard but given Spain are likely to be 1-0 up in this tie, taking Cristian Garin to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners seems the shrewd move. Both players, at either ends of their careers, have something to prove in 2022.
