THE PREDICTION

World number eight Casper Ruud became the first Norwegian man to qualify for the ATP Finals late last year and he proved his place worthy with a run to the semi-finals. The 23-year-old beat Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic in straight sets in Norway’s 1-2 opening tie defeat and it does not get any easier here with one of the very top nations likely to be 1-0 up after Pablo Carreno Busta takes on Viktor Durasovic in the first rubber. Ruud handled the pressure of keeping Norway in the tie against Lajovic but he will find a tougher opponent in world number 19 Roberto Bautista Agut, who conceded just three games to Chile’s Cristian Garin on Saturday. The 33-year-old ended last season sluggishly but he threw aside any notion that his level had gone for good with that performance. Ruud came off the worse in their only previous match back in 2018 but taking him to win at least a set as the just-about likeliest man to win seems a sensible move.
