THE PREDICTION
World number three Alexander Zverev ended last season as the best player on tour, certainly in terms of form, with a second career title at the ATP Finals. The 24-year-old started his ATP Cup well enough with a straight-sets win over Cameron Norrie but Team Germany’s decision to include him in their doubles decider with Great Britain backfired as he failed to connect effectively with Kevin Krawietz. With this tie likely to be 1-0 to the USA from John Isner and Jan-Lennard Struff’s opener, Zverev needs to win this first option rubber to keep Germany in the ATP Cup and that will be a tough ask against in-form Taylor Fritz. Fritz, also 24, took out Felix Auger-Aliassime from a set down on Sunday to continue his superb level from late last season. The world number 23 reached the semi-finals of Indian Wells via an incredible three-set victory over Zverev that brought their head-to-head record up to 3-2 in favour of the German.
Zverev remains the favourite for this rematch, especially as Germany’s tournament rests on it, but this version of Fritz is well capable of forcing a decider and that makes taking the German to win at least a set the very cautious, sensible move.
