THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Alexander Zverev is back up to his career-high ATP world ranking of third after capping off the best year of his professional career with the year-end ATP Finals crown. The German won five ATP titles last season including two Masters events in Madrid and Cincinnati but a second ATP Finals crown and a stunning run to the Gold Medal at toe Tokyo Olympic Games stand out as his greatest achievements to date and statements for more in 2022. However, the most-improved player in 2021 was Great Britain’s Cam Norrie, who set a career-high 12th in the ATP world rankings with a stupendous run to a first Masters title at Indian Wells in October. A 52-25 record for last season can be bettered by just a handful of the world’s very best players and it will be fascinating to see what the 26-year-old can do this year with the expectation firmly in place for a first time.
Here, though, it is likely that the world number three is simply a level above the rest of the tour alongside Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and (theoretically) a fit and firing Rafael Nadal. Zverev has beaten Norrie in straight sets in both of their previous encounters back in 2019 in the semi-finals of the Acapulco Open and later the Canadian Open. There will likely be a fair amount of rustiness for both players here and Norrie’s ability to stay level-headed in any situation is his very best asset against the top talents. Taking Zverev to win outright is the sensible option against such a tricky opponent.
