THE LOWDOWN
World number four Karolina Pliskova edged past Garbine Muguruza from a set down in a thrilling match on the second day of the WTA Finals. The 29-year-old has reached the semi-finals in each of her last three WTA Finals appearances but she has lost at least one group stage match in each of those. Pliskova made the second Grand Slam final of her career at Wimbledon earlier this year and also lost two other finals at Masters events in Rome and Montreal but she has been ruthless in reaching the latter stages of tournaments despite not yet lifting a trophy this season. World number eight Anett Kontaveit is the form tennis player in the world right now with a now 11-match winning streak after her straight-sets victory over Barbora Krejcikova. The 25-year-old has won her last two tournaments at the Kremlin Cup and Transylvania Open for a total of four in what has been an incredible 2021.
THE PREDICTION
Kontaveit is looking more and more like the favourite to win this WTA Finals with momentum the absolute key in the WTA this season. The Estonian will have to beat Pliskova for a first time if she is to improve her chances, though, with the Czech leading their head-to-head record 3-0 as it stands. Pliskova’s two most recent wins over Kontaveit came in 2019 on hard courts at Indian Wells and the Canadian Open, although this version of Kontaveit is a totally new challenge. This looks a really tight match to call with Pliskova’s cutting edge in service games likely to see her reach at least a tiebreak against her red-hot opponent. An outright Kontaveit victory feels like a slight risk, with this match going to three sets a distinct possibility, so taking the 25-year-old to win at least one is the cautious move here.
