Lanlana Tararudee needed three sets to make a winning start in Seoul, eventually beating Moyuka Uchijima 6-4 6-7 (5) 6-2. The third seed recovered well after losing a tight second set tiebreak, breaking Uchijima six times across the match and winning 64% of the points behind her second serve. The 22-year-old’s biggest successes this year have come at WTA 125 level, where she has collected two titles. She has also recorded her first Grand Slam main draw victories at Wimbledon and the US Open. 

Sohyun Park produced a major upset in the opening round, beating Robin Montgomery in straight sets. The Korean wildcard entered the tournament ranked 329 in the world, but she was largely in control of this encounter as she won 7-6 (4) 6-3. It was Park’s first Korea Open singles win after three previous first-round defeats. 

They have already faced each other this season, with Tararudee coming from a set down to win at the Mumbai WTA 125 earlier in the year. The Thai player is enjoying comfortably the stronger season and will be the clear favourite.
