THE LOWDOWN
There is no player in more form in tennis right now than world number eight Anett Kontaveit, who handed Karolina Pliskova a second-set bagel to qualify for the WTA Finals semi-finals here without dropping a set so far. The 25-year-old has won four WTA titles since late August, all on hardcourts, at the Cleveland Championships, Ostrava Open, Kremlin Cup and the Transylvania Open. Only Iga Swiatek at the US Open, Ons Jabeur at Indian Wells and an injury scare at the Chicago Falls Tennis Classic have seen her lose out on silverware in that span.
World number five Garbine Muguruza has been in some battles already this week in Guadalajara, with a three-set loss to Karolina Pliskova cancelled out by a brilliant win over Barbora Krejcikova on Friday. The win was her 11th out of 12 matches played in Mexico after she won back-to-back titles in Monterrey in 2018 and 2019 and she added two more titles to her career total of nine with wins in Dubai and Chicago this season. The former world number one is a two-time Grand Slam champion, winning Roland-Garros in 2016 and Wimbledon a year later, and she also finished runner-up to Sofia Kenin at last season’s Australian Open.
THE PREDICTION
Kontaveit and Muguruza share a finely poised 2-2 head-to-head record after the Estonian claimed their recent Kremlin Cup quarter-final in ruthless straight sets on her way to the title there in Moscow. Having already made it through the semi-finals, there is the slightest chance that Kontaveit may let her level slip enough to allow Muguruza in and the Spaniard’s experience at the WTA Finals should fare her well here – as well as her excellent record in Mexico. Winning is a habit that Kontaveit barely looks like breaking right now but if someone is to beat her in this group stage it is Muguruza with qualification still in her grasp. The safest option is for Kontaveit to win at least a set as the woman in form but taking Muguruza to win at least one instead looks a more valuable, shrewd move.
