World number 100 Jaqueline Cristian will start the 2022 season inside the top 100 for a first time after another great campaign. The 23-year-old beat the fourth seed Veronika Kudermetova in impressive fashion to reach the semi-finals of a WTA tournament for the first time after several quarter-final exits this season. However, she meets her match in fellow Romanian Simona Halep here, who beat her two weeks ago in the quarter-final of the Transylvania Open on her way to the final. 30-year-old Halep came back from a set down against Jasmine Paolini to win the third set 6-0 and that test could benefit her chances at making it nine straight seasons with at least one title won since her first of 22 WTA titles claimed in 2013. Cristian is improving all the time but anything other than a Halep outright win would be a huge shock here.
