It was a coupon-busting semi-finals day at the Linz Open with Simona Halep pulling out of her match with Jaqueline Cristian altogether and Danielle Collins retiring from her match with Alison Riske through injury. That leaves an unlikely final pair here for a first meeting that looks a difficult call to make for a few reasons. 23-year-old Cristian is the underdog here but the Romanian is playing the tennis of her career so far with wins over Ajla Tomljanovic and Kaja Juvan last week at the Transylvania Open and Veronika Kudermetova this week in Linz all pretty impressive. 31-year-old Alison Riske is the experienced pro here and through to her second WTA final in two months, with a shock defeat to Jasmine Paolini in the Slovenia Open back in September cause for concern here against another plucky youngster.
Escaping an almost certain defeat by Simona Halep may be all the momentum Cristian needs to go all the way here and taking the world number 100 to win at least a set looks a shrewd move, leaving the winner up to chance.
